The family of a black man who died after being placed in a white police officer's chokehold reached a $5.9 million settlement with the city on Monday, days before the anniversary of his death. Eric Garner's family in October filed a notice of claim, the first step in filing a lawsuit against the city, asking for $75 million. Garner, who was 43, was stopped last July 17 outside a Staten Island convenience store because police officers believed he was selling loose, untaxed cigarettes. A video shot by an onlooker shows Garner telling the officers to leave him alone and refusing to be handcuffed. Officer Daniel Pantaleo placed his arm around Garner's neck to take him down. Garner, who had asthma, was heard gasping "I can't breathe!" 11 times before losing consciousness. http://hosted2.ap.org...

This area of Manhattan is often called the Theater District or the Great White Way, a nickname originating in the headline "Found on the Great White Way" in the edition of February 3, 1902 of the New York Evening Telegram. The journalistic nickname was inspired by the millions of lights on theater marquees and billboard advertisements that illuminate the area. After becoming the city's de facto red-light district in the 1960s and 1970s (as can be seen in the films Taxi Driver and Midnight Cowboy), since the late 1980s Times Square has emerged as a family tourist center, in effect being Disneyfied following the company's purchase and renovation of the New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street in 1993. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadway_(Manhattan) Broadway theatre, commonly known as Broadway, refers to the theatrical performances presented in the 41 professional theatres with 500 or more seats located in the Theater District and Lincoln Center along Broadway, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Along with London's West End theatre, Broadway theatre is widely considered to represent the highest level of commercial theatre in the English-speaking world. The Theater District is a popular tourist attraction in New York City. According to The Broadway League, for the 2016–2017 season (which ended May 21, 2017), total attendance was 13,270,343 and Broadway shows had US$1,449,399,149 in grosses, with attendance down 0.4%, grosses up 5.5%, and playing weeks down 4.1%. The great majority of Broadway shows are musicals. Historian Martin Shefter argues, "'Broadway musicals,' culminating in the productions of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, became enormously influential forms of American popular culture" and helped make New York City the cultural capital of the nation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadway_theatre Midtown Manhattan, or Midtown, represents the central lengthwise portion of the borough and island of Manhattan in New York City. Midtown is home to some of the city's most iconic buildings, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and the headquarters of the United Nations, and it contains world-renowned commercial zones such as Rockefeller Center, Broadway, and Times Square. Midtown Manhattan is the largest central business district in the world and ranks among the most expensive and intensely used pieces of real estate in the world, and Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan commands the world's highest retail rents, at US$3,000 per square foot ($32,000/m2) in 2017. While Lower Manhattan is the main financial center, Midtown is the country's largest commercial, entertainment, and media center. It is also a growing financial center, second in importance only to Lower Manhattan's Financial District in the United States. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midtown_Manhattan With a record 61 million tourists in 2016, Manhattan is often described as the cultural, financial, media, and entertainment capital of the world and the borough hosts the United Nations Headquarters. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, New York County is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with a census-estimated 2016 population of 1,643,734 living in a land area of 22.83 square miles (59.13 km2), or 71,999 residents per square mile (27,799/km2), higher than the density of any individual U.S. city. On business days, the influx of commuters increases this number to over 3.9 million, or more than 170,000 people per square mile (65,600/km2). Manhattan has the third-largest population of New York City's five boroughs, after Brooklyn and Queens, and is the smallest borough in terms of land area. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan

Who Initiates Settlement Negotiations in a Civil Lawsuit in NY? http://www.oginski-law.com/library/3-things-to-consider-when-defense-offers-to-settle-your-case.cfm NY Medical Malpractice & Personal Injury Lawyer Gerry Oginski Explains 516-487-8207 Email: Gerry@Oginski-Law.com You are thinking of bringing a lawsuit. You believe someone was careless and cause you harm. You suffered terrible injuries. Before you actually begin your lawsuit, you want to know at what point in time your lawsuit might be settled, if ever. That's a great question to ask before deciding whether to start a lawsuit. You should know that in New York, a medical malpractice or wrongful death case typically takes anywhere from 2-3 years from start to finish. Many injured victims don't want to spend that length of time litigating their case. On the other hand, many injured victims have nothing to lose and they've already lost a significant part of their life because of someone else's carelessness. The reality is that settlement negotiations can occur at any time. They can be started by any of the litigants, their principals or the attorneys. They can occur during the claim process before a lawsuit is started. They can occur immediately after the lawsuit is started. They can occur during the discovery phase of your lawsuit. Once your case is on the trial calendar, settlement negotiations can occur from that point up until jury selection. Settlement discussions can begin even in jury selection. They can occur after opening arguments at trial. Settlement negotiations can begin while witnesses are on the witness stand and being cross examined. Settlement negotiations can occur even while the jury is out deliberating. Believe it or not, settlement negotiations can even occur AFTER a jury has returned a verdict in favor of the injured victim. Watch the video to learn more... On Wednesday, a judge in Pennsylvania approved a $300,000 settlement in a civil suit related to the death of a Baruch College freshman during a fraternity hazing ritual back in 2013. The settlement is the first in a lawsuit brought on by the family of 19-year-old Michael Deng, who died of head injuries suffered in what his family calls a violent hazing incident involving members of the Pi Delta Psi fraternity at a rented house in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. Sheldon Wong, who is one of five former members of the fraternity charged with third-degree murder, is the first of eight people sued by Deng's family to settle. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/EEXWsdJZ5as/us-pennsylvania-hazing-idUSKBN13B2P4 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

For New York City’s homeless, it is among the rudest of wake up calls. And for Floyd Parks, October 2015 surveillance video showed New York City Police officers waking him and other homeless people, before dragging their belongings away from them…out into the street - and into a waiting city sanitation truck. It took fifteen months, but Floyd and two other homeless men who sued the city for throwing away their belongings - are now claiming victory against the police department and the de Blasio administration…with a newly announced fifteen hundred dollar settlement.

Garner, who had asthma, was heard gasping "I can't breathe!" 11 times before losing consciousness. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2015-07-13-US--Chokehold%20Death-Settlement/id-0ee2cb2245a7422081750ca66584598a http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

New York City's police department has agreed to reform its stop-and-frisk practices in public housing projects as part of a proposed settlement in a federal class action lawsuit, the latest step in altering a broad policing strategy that critics assailed as unconstitutional. The preliminary settlement, which requires approval from U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin in Manhattan, would mandate changes to police regulations and training materials that govern patrols in public housing, among other reforms. The 2010 lawsuit is one of three major stop-and-frisk class actions filed years ago. http://news.yahoo.com/nyc-police-reform-public-housing-stop-frisk-settlement-213842964.html http://www.wochit.com
